Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HbOT) emerges as a potential game-changer for Eczema sufferers.

What is Eczema?

A persistent skin disorder, dry, itchy, and irritated skin are the hallmarks of eczema.

There are a number of things that can cause a flare-up of eczema, including but not limited to stress, allergens, and irritants.

One side effect of those required to take topical steroids for a long time (a common treatment for eczema), is topical steroid withdrawal or TSW.

Long-term steroid usage has been linked to unpleasant side effects such itching, burning, and red skin.

Unfortunately, when patients suddenly stop using topical steroids, they can experience unpleasant and sometimes debilitating withdrawal symptoms.

For those with suffering with eczema or TSW, HbOT could be the solution they’ve been searching for.

Recent research has spotlighted HbOT for eczema and TSW as a prime therapy option for alleviating symptoms and enhancing patients’ quality of life

Can HbOT help with Eczema & TSW?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HbOT) is gaining popularity as a viable option for treating a variety of medical ailments including HbOT for eczema.

Eczema and topical steroid withdrawal (TSW) are two health conditions that can cause a lot of suffering for patients.

Recent research has established that HbOT for eczema and TSW is a viable therapy option, providing symptom alleviation and enhancing patients’ quality of life.

Patients breathe in almost pure oxygen in the environment of a pressurised chamber or pod.

HbOT for eczema and TSW provides symptom alleviation and enhanced quality of life by:

  • Decreasing inflammation
  • Speeding up the healing process
  • Strengthening the immune system

Please Note: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy compliments conventional treatment, we do not recommend it as an alternative. If you are unsure, please consult your doctor.

The benefits of HbOT for eczema and TSW

These research results show that HbOT could be a viable alternative treatment option for those suffering from eczema and TSW.

HbOT is effective because it increases the body’s oxygen supply, which:

  • Decreases inflammation
  • Speeds up the healing of wounds
  • Strengthens the immune system

All of these benefits make HbOT a positive option for the treatment of inflammatory and immune-compromised disorders like eczema and TSW.

The therapeutic effects of HbOT for eczema go well beyond the alleviation of physical symptoms.

Improvements in sleep, happiness, and anxiety are just a few of the ways in which patients’ lives have been enhanced after receiving HbOT treatment.

These added benefits could be especially helpful for people dealing with long-term health issues like eczema or TSW, which can have a dramatic effect on everyday functioning.

The positive results of these trials show that HbOT could be a valuable additional therapy option for patients suffering from eczema or TSW.

Further study is necessary to fully understand the advantages of HbOT in the treatment of these disorders.

The research on HbOT for eczema and TSW

Polish researchers studied the efficacy of HbOT for eczema, and their findings were published in May 2017 on Sciendo.com (Polish Hyperbaric Research). In the study, fifty individuals were given three weeks of HbOT treatment.

The researchers found that HbOT for eczema considerably reduced the severity of eczema symptoms such itching, dryness, and redness of the skin.

The authors concluded that HbOT offered a viable therapeutic choice for eczema sufferers as it was both safe and effective.

In a separate study released by the Journal of Hyperbaric Medicine, released a study looking at the efficacy of HBOT for TSW.

Thirty-two people participated in a trial to examine the efficacy of HbOT for TSW.

Following four weeks of HbOT treatment, it was found that the intensity of TSW symptoms including itching, burning, and redness of the skin were all reduced.

The authors concluded that HbOT for TSW was a viable therapeutic choice for patients as it alleviated symptoms and was safe.
